Acetylcystdar 600 mg (12 Effervescent Tablets)
Marketing Authorization Holder: CID (Chemical Industries Development)
Manufacturer: Pharmadar
Category: Mucolytic (Phlegm/Mucus Thinner)
Active Ingredient per Effervescent Tablet:
- Acetylcysteine (NAC): 600 mg
Summary
Acetylcystdar 600 mg is a mucolytic medication provided as effervescent tablets. It is used to treat respiratory conditions where mucus is thick, sticky, and difficult to clear. The active ingredient, Acetylcysteine, works by thinning the phlegm, making it easier to cough up. This helps to relieve chest congestion and improve breathing. The effervescent form allows for easy administration as a drink.
Mechanism of Action
- Mucolytic Effect: Acetylcysteine breaks the disulfide bonds in mucus proteins, which dramatically reduces the viscosity (thickness) of phlegm.
- Antioxidant Effect: It also acts as a precursor to glutathione, one of the body's most important antioxidants, helping to protect lung tissues from oxidative damage.
Indications
For the treatment of respiratory conditions associated with excessive and thick mucus, such as:
- Acute and chronic bronchitis.
- Productive ("wet") coughs.
- As an adjunctive therapy in conditions like COPD and sinusitis.
Dosage
For Adults and Adolescents from 14 years of age:
- The usual dose is one effervescent tablet (600 mg) dissolved in a glass of water, taken once daily.
- Drink the solution immediately after the tablet has fully dissolved.
Warnings and Precautions
- Critical Interaction: Do not take this medication with cough suppressants (antitussives). This medicine thins mucus so you can cough it up; a cough suppressant prevents this and can cause a dangerous buildup of phlegm.
- Age & Strength: The 600 mg strength is generally not suitable for children. Lower strengths are available for pediatric use.
- Sodium/Sweeteners: Effervescent tablets contain sodium and may contain sweeteners. Patients with hypertension, heart conditions, or diabetes should consult their doctor before use.
- Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with bronchial asthma or an active peptic ulcer. Stop use if bronchospasm (airway narrowing) occurs.
Key Patient Advice
- Dissolve one tablet completely in a glass of water before drinking.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help the medication work effectively.
- The slight sulfur ("rotten egg") smell is a normal characteristic of Acetylcysteine.
- Store in a cool, dry place, keeping the tube tightly closed to protect from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
- Note: Acetylcysteine is also used in different forms and doses as an antidote for paracetamol overdose in hospital settings.
