Detailed Commentary on Active Ingredients
About Magaldrate (The Antacid)
Mechanism of Action: Magaldrate is a fast-acting antacid that neutralizes stomach acid, raises gastric pH, reduces the activity of the digestive enzyme pepsin, and forms a protective layer over the stomach lining.
Indications: It is used for the symptomatic relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, gastritis, and as an adjunctive treatment for peptic ulcers.
About Simethicone (The Anti-Gas Agent)
Mechanism of Action: Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent. It works by breaking down the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines. This allows small, trapped bubbles to merge into larger ones, which can be more easily passed from the body, relieving bloating, pressure, and fullness.
Indications: It is used to relieve the symptoms of excess gas in the digestive tract.
Choosing the Right Product
- Choose ACICONE (tablets or suspension) if your primary symptoms are related to acid (heartburn, sour stomach).
- Choose ACICONE-S (tablets or suspension) if you experience both acid-related symptoms AND gas-related symptoms like bloating, pressure, or a feeling of fullness.
Dosage and Administration
Important: Always follow the dosage instructions provided on the specific product package or by your physician.
- Chewable Tablets: The usual adult dose is 1 to 2 tablets, chewed thoroughly, between meals and at bedtime, or as needed. Do not swallow whole.
- Oral Suspension: Shake the bottle well before use. The usual adult dose is 5 to 10 ml (1-2 teaspoonfuls), between meals and at bedtime, or as needed.
General Warnings and Precautions (Applies to all ACICONE products)
- Drug Interactions: The Magaldrate component can reduce the absorption of many other drugs. Take other medications at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking any Acicone product. This is especially important for antibiotics (e.g., Tetracyclines), thyroid hormones, and iron supplements.
- Renal Impairment: Use with caution in patients with kidney disease due to the risk of magnesium and aluminum accumulation.
- Long-Term Use: Do not use for more than two weeks continuously without consulting a doctor.
Possible Side Effects
- From Magaldrate: Mild constipation or diarrhea, chalky taste.
- From Simethicone: Simethicone is not absorbed by the body and is generally considered to have no side effects.
- Rare/Serious (with prolonged high-dose use): Electrolyte imbalances.
