Acetylcistein 200 mg (10 Sachets)
Manufacturer: SEDICO (South Egyptian Drug Industries Company)
Category: Mucolytic (Phlegm/Mucus Thinner)
Active Ingredient per Sachet:
- Acetylcysteine (NAC): 200 mg
Summary
Acetylcistein 200 mg is a mucolytic medication used to treat respiratory conditions with thick, difficult-to-clear mucus. It works by chemically thinning the phlegm, making it easier to cough up. This helps relieve chest congestion and improves breathing.
Mechanism of Action
- Mucolytic Effect: Acetylcysteine breaks the disulfide bonds in mucus proteins, which dramatically reduces the viscosity (thickness) of phlegm, allowing for easier clearance from the airways.
- Antioxidant Effect: It also acts as a precursor to glutathione, one of the body's most important antioxidants, helping to protect lung tissues from oxidative damage.
Indications
For the treatment of respiratory conditions associated with excessive and thick mucus, such as:
- Acute and chronic bronchitis.
- Productive ("wet") coughs.
- As an adjunctive therapy in conditions like COPD and sinusitis.
Dosage
Important: Always follow the dosage instructions from your physician.
- Adults and children over 7 years: One sachet (200 mg) dissolved in water, two to three times daily.
- Children 2 to 7 years: One sachet (200 mg) dissolved in water, twice daily.
- Administration: Dissolve the contents of the sachet in a small glass of water, stir, and drink immediately.
Warnings and Precautions
- Critical Interaction: Do not take this medication with cough suppressants (antitussives). Acetylcistein thins mucus so you can cough it up. A cough suppressant will prevent this, leading to a dangerous buildup of phlegm.
- Asthma & Bronchospasm: Use with caution in patients with asthma. If airway narrowing occurs, stop treatment immediately.
- Peptic Ulcers: Use with caution in patients with a history of stomach ulcers.
- Age Limit: Not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
Possible Side Effects
While uncommon, some people may experience:
- Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort.
- Rarely, allergic reactions (skin rash, itching).
- Bronchospasm in susceptible individuals (e.g., asthmatics).
Key Patient Advice
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help the medication work effectively.
- The slight sulfur ("rotten egg") smell is a normal characteristic of Acetylcysteine.
- Do not combine this product with a dry cough medicine.
- If symptoms do not improve after a week, consult your doctor.
- Store below 30°C in a dry place and keep out of the reach of children.
