Lohydran ORS: A Complete Guide to Oral Rehydration Solution

Manufacturer: Chemical Industries Development (CID)

Category: Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS)

Active Ingredients per 4.1g Sachet:

  • Glucose Anhydrous: 2.700 g
  • Sodium Chloride: 0.520 g
  • Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate: 0.580 g
  • Potassium Chloride: 0.300 g

Summary

Lohydran is a scientifically formulated oral rehydration solution (ORS) designed to effectively treat dehydration caused by diarrhea and vomiting. It contains a precise balance of glucose (sugar) and electrolytes (salts) that helps the body reabsorb lost fluids and minerals much more efficiently than water alone. Its orange flavor makes it more palatable and acceptable, especially for children.

Why is Lohydran So Effective? The Science of Rehydration

When the body loses fluids through diarrhea, it also loses essential electrolytes like sodium and potassium. Simply drinking water is not enough and can sometimes worsen the electrolyte imbalance. Lohydran works through a process called "co-transport":

  1. Glucose: The presence of glucose actively helps the intestines to absorb sodium.
  2. Sodium and Potassium: As sodium is absorbed, water follows it into the body's cells, leading to effective rehydration. Potassium chloride replaces the potassium lost during diarrhea, which is vital for muscle and nerve function.
  3. Trisodium Citrate: This component helps to correct metabolic acidosis, a dangerous condition where the body becomes too acidic due to severe diarrhea and dehydration.

Indications

Lohydran is primarily used for:

  • The treatment and prevention of dehydration due to gastroenteritis (stomach flu) and diarrhea of any cause.
  • Replacing fluid and electrolyte losses in cases of chronic diarrhea or laxative abuse.

How to Prepare and Use Lohydran

Correct preparation is crucial for the solution to be effective and safe.

  1. Preparation: Dissolve the entire contents of one sachet in 200 ml of clean drinking water. For infants, it is best to use water that has been previously boiled and then cooled.
  2. Mixing: Stir well until the powder is completely dissolved.
  3. Important: Do not boil the solution after it has been prepared.
  4. Storage: The prepared solution should be used within one hour if kept at room temperature. If refrigerated, it can be used for up to 24 hours. Discard any unused solution after this period.

Dosage Guidelines:

  • Adults: Drink 200-400 ml of the solution after every loose stool.
  • Children (2 years and older): Drink 200 ml of the solution after every loose stool.
  • Infants (under 2 years): Give approximately 1 to 1.5 times their usual feed volume. The solution should be given slowly using a spoon or bottle, in small, frequent sips.

Contraindications

Do not use Lohydran if there is a known gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Vomiting: If vomiting occurs, wait for 10 minutes and then try to give the solution again, but more slowly and in smaller sips.
  • Severe Dehydration: In cases of severe dehydration (e.g., signs of shock, inability to drink), intravenous (IV) fluids in a hospital setting are necessary.
  • Underlying Conditions: Use with caution in patients with severe kidney disease, liver disease, or diabetes. Consult a doctor first.
  • Feeding: For infants, breastfeeding or formula feeding should continue alongside the rehydration therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I mix Lohydran with milk or juice to make it taste better?
No. You must only mix it with the specified amount of clean water (200 ml). Mixing it with other liquids will change the precise balance of sugar and salts, making it ineffective and potentially harmful.

What should I do if my child refuses to drink it?
Try giving it in very small amounts using a spoon or a syringe (without the needle). You can also try chilling the solution, as some children prefer it cold. If refusal persists and diarrhea continues, you must consult a doctor.

Is Lohydran safe during pregnancy?
Yes, Lohydran is considered safe and effective for use during pregnancy and lactation to treat dehydration.
