Available Forms & Strengths:

  • Pediatric Drops: 100 mg/ml

Summary

Curisafe, with the active ingredient Cefadroxil, is a widely used first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is effective against a broad range of bacteria and is prescribed to treat a variety of infections, from common throat and skin infections to more serious urinary tract and respiratory infections. Its availability in multiple forms makes it a versatile choice for both adults and children.

Mechanism of Action: How Does Curisafe Work?

Cefadroxil is a **bactericidal** antibiotic, which means it kills bacteria directly. It works by interfering with the construction of the bacterial cell wall. By disrupting this essential structure, the cell wall becomes weak and breaks down, leading to the death of the bacterium. As a "first-generation" cephalosporin, it is particularly effective against many common Gram-positive bacteria (like Staphylococci and Streptococci) and some Gram-negative bacteria.

Indications

Curisafe is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Cellulitis, abscesses, furuncles (boils), and infected wounds.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Cystitis (bladder infection) and pyelonephritis (kidney infection).
  • Other Infections: Including bone infections (osteomyelitis) and certain genital tract infections.

Dosage and Administration

Important: The dose depends on the type and severity of the infection. Always follow your doctor's prescription. Curisafe can be taken with or without food.

Adults:

  • Skin & Respiratory Infections: 1 g per day, usually given as 500 mg every 12 hours.
  • Pharyngitis & Tonsillitis: 1 g per day, can be given as a single dose or 500 mg every 12 hours, for at least 10 days.
  • Urinary Tract Infections: 1-2 g per day, given as a single dose or divided into two doses.

Children:

  • The usual recommended dose is **25-50 mg/kg/day**, divided into two doses (every 12 hours). The doctor will calculate the exact dose based on your child's weight.

Reconstitution: For the suspension and drops, add water as directed on the bottle and shake well. The reconstituted suspension is stable for 7 days at room temperature or 14 days if refrigerated.

Contraindications

Do not use Curisafe if you have a known hypersensitivity (allergy) to cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Penicillin Allergy: Inform your doctor if you have a history of penicillin allergy, as there is a possibility of cross-allergy.
  • Kidney Impairment: The dose must be adjusted in patients with impaired kidney function.
  • Complete the Course: It is crucial to take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if you start to feel better, to ensure the infection is completely eradicated and to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: Gastrointestinal issues like nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.
  • Less Common: Skin rash, hives (urticaria), and itching.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between Curisafe and other antibiotics like Amoxicillin?
Both are broad-spectrum antibiotics, but they belong to different classes (Cephalosporins vs. Penicillins). Cefadroxil (Curisafe) often has a broader spectrum against certain bacteria, especially those that produce penicillinase, an enzyme that can inactivate some penicillins.

Why is it important to take the medication for 10 days for a throat infection?
For throat infections caused by Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, a 10-day course is necessary to completely eradicate the bacteria and, most importantly, to prevent serious complications like rheumatic fever, which can damage the heart.

What should I do if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
