What This Tool Does

AbbrVault is a searchable reference library of pharmaceutical and medical abbreviations, built for people who need to look up or standardize terminology while drafting clinical, regulatory, or academic documents. It addresses the problem of inconsistent, ambiguous, or unsafe abbreviation use by combining a searchable library with an automatic flag for abbreviations that ISMP designates as error-prone or "Do Not Use."

The library contains 725 entries across 15 subject categories — including routes of administration, dosing frequency, dosage forms, statistics, regulatory/ICH terminology, adverse events, laboratory values, and pharmacokinetics — compiled from terminology used by ICH, FDA, EMA, ISMP (both the U.S. and Canada lists ), MedDRA, and CDISC. The user searches or browses the library, adds relevant entries to a personal document list (which can include their own custom entries), and exports the finished list as plain text, Markdown, an HTML table, or a Word-pasteable format.

Features & Functions

  • Searchable library of 725 pharmaceutical/medical abbreviation entries
  • Search matches against both the abbreviation itself and its full expansion/definition in the same search box
  • 15 subject-matter categories to filter by (Routes of Administration, Dosing Frequency, Dosage Forms, Study Design, Statistics, Regulatory/ICH, Adverse Events, Laboratory, Pharmacokinetics, Vital Signs & Physical, Time & Duration, Organizations, Document Types, Clinical Terms, Miscellaneous), plus an "All Abbreviations" view
  • Automatic visual flag (badge and colored border) on any entry ISMP designates as "Do Not Use" or error-prone
  • Build a personal, ordered document list by adding entries from the library
  • Add custom abbreviation entries of your own alongside the built-in library
  • Custom entries are automatically screened for common sensitive-data patterns before being added
  • Sort your document list three ways: order added, alphabetically, or grouped by category
  • Reorder your document list by dragging entries (available in "order added" mode)
  • Remove individual entries from your document list, or clear all custom entries at once
  • Export your document list in four formats: plain text, Markdown, an HTML table, or tab-separated (Word-pasteable)
  • Copy the export directly to your clipboard, with an automatic fallback method if the browser blocks the standard copy action
  • Download the export as a file
  • Print your document list directly from the browser
  • Your document list and custom entries are saved automatically in your browser and persist between sessions on the same device
