OXY-POL®: A Guide to the Combination Eye Ointment
Manufacturer: EIPICO (Egyptian Int. Pharmaceutical Industries Co.)
Category: Topical Ophthalmic Antibiotic
Active Ingredients (per gram of ointment):
- Oxytetracycline hydrochloride: 5 mg
- Polymyxin B sulphate: 10,000 IU
Available Form: Tube of 5 g eye ointment.
Summary
OXY-POL® is a combination antibiotic eye ointment used to treat superficial bacterial infections of the eye and eyelids. It combines two different antibiotics, Oxytetracycline and Polymyxin B, to provide broad-spectrum coverage against a wide range of bacteria responsible for common eye infections.
Mechanism of Action: A Dual-Antibiotic Strategy
OXY-POL® works by attacking bacteria in two complementary ways:
- Oxytetracycline: A tetracycline-class antibiotic that is bacteriostatic—it stops bacteria from multiplying by inhibiting their ability to produce essential proteins. It is effective against many common Gram-positive bacteria (like Staphylococcus and Streptococcus) and some Gram-negative bacteria.
- Polymyxin B: A polypeptide antibiotic that is bactericidal—it actively kills bacteria by disrupting their cell membranes, causing the cellular contents to leak out. Its primary role in this combination is its excellent activity against tough Gram-negative bacteria, most notably Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause severe eye infections and is not covered by Oxytetracycline.
This combination provides powerful, broad coverage, making it effective for initial treatment when the exact causative bacteria may not yet be known.
Therapeutic Indications: When is OXY-POL® Used?
OXY-POL® is indicated for the treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the eye, such as:
- Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane covering the white part of the eye.
- Blepharitis: Inflammation of the eyelids.
- Keratitis: Inflammation of the cornea (the clear front part of the eye).
- Blepharoconjunctivitis: A combination of conjunctivitis and blepharitis.
Important: OXY-POL® is not effective against viral infections (like viral pink eye), fungal infections, or simple irritation.
Dosage and Correct Application
The typical dosage is a thin strip of ointment (approximately 1 cm) applied into the lower eyelid of the affected eye, 2 to 4 times daily, or as directed by a physician.
How to Apply Eye Ointment Correctly:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Tilt your head back and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Squeeze a thin strip of ointment into this pocket. Do not let the tip of the tube touch your eye, eyelid, or any other surface.
- Close your eye gently for 1-2 minutes to allow the ointment to spread.
- Your vision will likely be blurry for a few minutes after application. This is normal.
Key Contraindications, Warnings, and Side Effects
- Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to Oxytetracycline, Polymyxin B, or any other tetracycline antibiotic.
- Side Effects: The most common side effect is temporary blurred vision immediately after application. Allergic reactions, such as redness, itching, or swelling of the eyelid, can occur but are rare. If this happens, stop using the ointment and contact your doctor.
- Superinfection: Prolonged use of antibiotics can sometimes lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, such as fungi. Use only for the duration prescribed by your doctor.
- Driving and Using Machines: Due to the temporary blurring of vision, avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision is clear.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- How long does it take for OXY-POL® to work?
- You should start to see an improvement in your symptoms (less redness, discharge, and irritation) within a few days of starting treatment. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel better, to ensure the infection is completely eradicated.
- Can I use OXY-POL® if I wear contact lenses?
- No. You should not wear contact lenses while you are treating an eye infection. The ointment can also coat the lens. Wait until the infection has completely cleared and you have finished your course of treatment before wearing your lenses again, and consult your doctor if you are unsure.
- Is OXY-POL® the same as Terramycin® eye ointment?
- They are similar but not identical. Terramycin® eye ointment also contains Oxytetracycline and Polymyxin B. They are often used for the same types of infections, but you should always use the specific product prescribed by your doctor.
