Betamethasone dipropionate
Topical corticosteroid
Composition:
Each grain cream/ointment contains: ::
Betamethasone dipropionate 0.64 mg
(Equivalent to 0.5 mg Betamethasone)
Properties:
Betamethasone is an active topical corticosteroid with a sustained anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and va.soconstrictive actions.
Topical betamethasone produces a rapid response in those inflammatory dermatoses that are jj normally responsive to topical corticosteroid therapy and is often effective in the less responsive : conditions such as psoriasis.
Topical betamethasone demonstrates its activities in a sustained manner, thereby permitting twice a day or in some cases once a day application.
Indications:
Betarnethasone cream/ointment is indicated for the topical treatment of the inflammatory
dermatoses-which include: - - -
- Eczema in children and adults including atopic and discoid eczemas, flexural eczema, and stasis eczema.
- Localised neurodermatitis (lichen simplex chronicus).
- Seborrheic dermatitis.
- Psonasis (excluding widespread plaque psonass).
- Napkin rash (as short term treatment in severe cases).
- Contact sensitivity reactions and allergy.
- Insect bites, sun burn, prickly heat and generalized erytbrodema. X
Use: :
A thin film of Betamethasone cream / ointment should be applied to cover completely the affected area once or twice daily, morning and night.
Treatment should be continued few days after symptoms have disappeared to maintain progressive improvement.
Side effects:
Betamethasone cream/ointment is usually well tolerated but the following reactions may occur when Betamethasone cream/ointment is applied to large areas of the body or for long periods of time, particularly when occlusive dressing is used: burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae and miliaria.
Precautions:
- The possibility for systemic absorption particularly in infants and children should be considered .
- - - ëtfBetajnëfli is used on extensive areas or for prolonged periods.
- Courses should be limited if possible and occlusion should not be used if Betamethasone cream ) /ointment is used in discoid lupus erythmatosus, severe eczema and on the face to avoid any atrophic changes.
- Careful patient supervision is important if Betamethasone cream lointment is used in psoriasis.
- Appropriate antimicrobial therapy should be used when treating inflammatory lesions which have become infected. Any spread of infection requires withdrawal of topical corticosteroid therapy and systemic administration of antimicrobial agents.
Contra-indications:
- Betamethasone cream/ointment is contra-indicated in those patients with a history of sensitivity reactions to any of its components.
- Bacterial, mycotic and viral infections of the skin.
- Tuberculosis of the skin.
- Rosacea.
- Syphilis, perioral dermatitis.
- Acne vulgaris.
- AppWc to the eye.
Use during pregnancy:
Betametha.sone preparations should not be used by pregnant women unless in the judgment of the physician the potential benefits outweigh the possible hazards.
